Subject: FMC's Artist Revenue Streams: recent releases and events

      <http://futureofmusic.org/ars>

*This is your periodic update about FMC's Artist Revenue Streams project, a
multi-method, cross-genre examination of musicians' sources of income.*

*New publications*

*Leverage *

In the course of doing this work, one of the most revealing things that we
have found is the different amounts of leverage that musicians have over
how -- and how much -- they are paid. We've also noticed the general lack
of understanding about how rates are set, and who is at the bargaining
table. For FMC's Summit, Jean Cook put together a clear presentation that
explains the typical stakeholders in negotiations, and if/how musicians can
influence how much they are paid. Jean has recently converted her
presentation into a more robust post here:
http://money.futureofmusic.org/leverage/

*Mythbusting *

One of the reasons that we even took up this work in the first place was to
counter some assumptions that are commonly made about how musicians make
money -- things like "all musicians are rich", or "musicians make all their
money on merch". At SXSW this year, we ran a panel that tackled some of
these assumptions with data. We are now converting that conversation into a
four part data-driven series that challenges the veracity of these myths.
We started to publishing these this week, you can read the first two
installments here:

*Recent publications and presentations*

In July, Berklee College of Music's Music Business
Journal<http://www.thembj.org/2012/07/diy-musicians-alone-together/>posted
a longform article by Kristin that covers revenue streams and the
value of team members, as a data-driven counterweight to the notion that
musicians can do it all themselves.

We were also invited to post an article on the blog Scholars and
Rogues<http://scholarsandrogues.com/2012/09/20/special-report-new-future-of-music-coalition-study-finds-that-technology-is-a-double-edged-sword-for-musicians/>in
September.

Our work was also cited in the recent Berklee College of Music Salary
Survey<http://www.berklee.edu/pdf/pdf/studentlife/Music_Salary_Guide.pdf>.

...which was then cited by Jimmy Jam in his recent testimony in front of
the House Judiciary Committee.

*Recent events*

Jean and Kristin have been busy attending events. We talked about our
findings at New Music Seminar, The Recording Academy's Independents' Day,
San Diego Music Thing, Pop Montreal, San Fran Music Tech, CMJ, Music and
Copyright, and the annual Future of Music Summit. We also did an in-depth
revenue streams workshop with Words, Beats and Life prior to FMC's Summit.
