The United States, Australia, Canada, Japan, Morocco, New Zealand,
Singapore, and South Korea signed the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement,
an accord targeting intellectual property piracy. The United States called
the accord an important step in "the international fight against
intellectual property theft," perhaps no surprise given that it would expand
US-style law to other countries. The accord demands that governments make it
illegal to market devices that circumvent copyright, similar to the DMCA’s
restrictions on DVD copying. Rashmi Rangnath, a staff attorney with Public
Knowledge in Washington, D.C., said the deal "clearly is an attempt to foist
U.S. law on other countries." The European Union has not signed the accord
but representatives of the EU say it will sign the deal "as soon as
practical."
