[isoc-ny] MEETUP 5/22: IGF-USA in NYC – URBAN COMMUNITY NETWORKS – PRACTICE & POLICY

ISOC-NY announcements announce at lists.isoc-ny.org

The credo of the Internet Society is "The Internet is for Everyone." As we
look to connect the three billion that still do not have access, fostering
community networks has become a priority. While finance, equipment, and
training are crucial, in many case such networks are hindered by adverse
regulatory environments. And, while there is an obvious emphasis in hooking
up folks in far flung places, there are still many unserved, or
underserved, in cities, even in New York. In fact, NYC through the
pioneering efforts of such as the NYC Wireless, the Red Hook Initiative,
Silicon Harlem. NYC Mesh, and now a new cluster of RISE projects, is
leading the way in establishing urban community networks. Cities have their
own unique characteristics - in spectrum, logistics, and regulations.
Franchise laws for example. Access to infrastructure such as dark fiber,
conduits, roofs etc. The use of tv white spaces - we are happy to have
Melissa Sassi of Microsoft's Airband Initiative
<https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/affordable-access-initiative/home/> in
attendance on Tuesday. Another chunk of spectrum is the Citizens Broadband
Radio Service
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizens_Broadband_Radio_Service> - intended
for public use but being rapidly appropriated by incumbents. Join us on
Tuesday afternoon in the convivial Geraldo's at Brooklyn Law School to talk
about these questions and more. Lots of room. We still have open slots for
speakers local or remote, contact admin at isoc-ny.org if interested.
