At this event, anyone from the public is invited to LaGuardia to join
students, professors, and CUNY faculty in translating Wikipedia articles
among any languages which attendees understand. Themes for this event
include nursing and the history of New York City.

New York City has a large immigrant population and great diversity of
speakers of various languages. Among all schools in New York City,
LaGuardia has the highest percentage of immigrant students, the highest
percentage of students who speak a language other than English as their
first language, and the greatest representation of language diversity. It
is a strength of LaGuardia that it can present
"Wikipedia translate-a-thons", which are Wikipedia translation events.

Event participants will leave with the following:

   1. Perspective and the ability to discuss Wikipedia's place in the media
   2. Live publication of information in Wikipedia and instructions for
seeing how many people read it
   3. Experience of having edited Wikipedia a few times in the usual way

with three days of conferences, discussions, meetups, training, and
workshops. Hundreds of volunteers and Free Knowledge leaders from around
the world gather to discuss issues, report on new projects and approaches,
and exchange ideas.

Themes of the conference include the advancement of Free Knowledge, the
role of academic and cultural institutions within the movement, privacy and
rights, and the role of technology to further those objectives. Wikimania
2018 will specifically focus on the gaps - gender, cultural, demographic
and knowledge - and strategies for reducing them.

It was fantastic seeing Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales wear one of our
AfroCROWD t-shirts at a recent Knight Foundation conference. At the
conference Mr. Wales discussed the *WikiTribune.* A new open-source news

*AfroCROWD and Wikimedia NYC partner with the Swedish Mission to the UN for
WikiGap, 2018 *AfroCROWD joined forces with the Swedish Mission to the
United Nations, Wikimedia New York City and others throughout the UN system
for WikiGap 2018.

Led by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this event was part of the
*#WikiGap* *initiative*, a partnership between Swedish embassies and local
Wikimedia affiliates and volunteers around the world *to close the gender
and diversity gap* on Wikipedia. Guests from throughout the United Nations
system gathered on International Women's Day at the UN headquarters to edit
and write articles on women leaders from around the world.

Our Sherry Antoine and Wikimedia NYC's Megan Wacha were among the
moderators of the event. Wikipedia coaches from Wikimedia New York City and
AfroCROWD helped train guests who hailed from all over the world and
together added thousands of words on the work of women leaders to the
Wikipedia lexicon and the greater WikiGap campaign. Great going everyone!

*AfroCROWD joins the Art and Feminism packed schedule during Women's
History Month*

AfroCROWD was pleased to link up with fellow Wikipedia project, Art and
Feminism, at recent events for Women's History Month in New York City. This
year, the project, which focuses on improving coverage of cis and
transgender women, feminism and the arts on Wikipedia, held an editathon *
every week* during the month of March. Quite at feat.

We joined the annual Art and Feminism editathon at the Museum of Modern Art
(MoMA). Alice Backer, AfroCROWD's founder and Sherry Antoine, our program
and outreach manager, also participated in a panel moderated by Art and
Feminism co-founder Sian Evans with other female organizers at the *Out of
Bounds*, the 46th Annual Conference of the Art Libraries Society of North
America (ARLIS/NA) in New York City.

What an amazing month!

recently moderated a Wiki EDU panel during Wikipedia Day LA , which was
held on Saturday, March 31st.

Here is your Wikimedia tip of the day courtesy of the Wikimedia community:

*Did you know:*

*The Wiki Loves Women Project *

The Wiki Loves Women project seeks to fill two major subject gaps – women
and Africa – on the free encyclopaedia Wikipedia. These gaps exist both in
content on these two themes, but also in terms of participation in the
editorial level. Their objective is the fight against the existing
inequalities between men and women on the African continent.

*AfroCROWD i.e. ** Afro Free Culture Crowdsourcing Wikimedia (AfroCROWD)*
is an outreach initiative which seeks to increase awareness of the
Wikimedia and free knowledge, culture and software movements among
potential editors of African descent. Since its launch during Black Wiki
History Month in 2015, AfroCROWD has sensitized thousands in its target
audience about free culture crowdsourcing and the need to close the
multicultural and gender gaps in Wikipedia. AfroCROWD has also held monthly
multilingual edit-a-thons in partnership with cultural institutions,
galleries, libraries, archives, museums (GLAM) and many others. AfroCROWD
has also worked with professors at educational institutions like New York
University, The New School, Icahn Medical School and Columbia University
among others. AfroCROWD also organizes events to train future trainers in
its target community.
