The FCC has designated August as Rural Broadband Month
<https://www.facebook.com/FCC/posts/10154999859879671> and will discuss
many related matters at its Open Meeting
<https://www.fcc.gov/news-events/events/2017/08/august-2017-open-commission-meeting>
on Wednesday. Just because ISOC-NY is primarily an urban Chapter does not
mean we are not concerned with rural connectivity. Plenty of upstate,
despite Cuomo's best efforts <https://www.ny.gov/programs/broadband-all>,
remains an Internet desert. The Appalachia/Ohio event below, from a couple
of weeks back, is a brief yet definitive exploration of the current issues,
funding, models, regulation etc etc. I suggest skipping the first 26 mins
in Chris Mitchell's to where he gets down to business. The message that he,
and Commissioner Clyburn, delivered is that it is up to communities to take
their connectivity into their own hands, and to organize sooner rather than
later, before massive subsidies end up in the hands of the incumbents.
Existing such community efforts are explored in the panel. Finally I do
recommend spending time to listen to the background interview with
community organizer LIz Shaw, in which she graphically and humorously
relates the frustrations that led to the conference itself.
