You may have read Andrew Zaleski's lengthy 'Rise and Fall' story this week
about Makerbot. An essential elementt is that they struck out when they,
jettisoning open source and the maker community, aimed for a home run in
the consumer market. 3D Hubs <https://www.3dhubs.com/>, who were presented
at the IoT NY meetup this week, are the other side of the coin. Recognizing
that 3D printing is very much a shared resource, they have formed a
community driven global network of over 20k printing locations
<https://www.3dhubs.com/cities>, plus a shared knowledge base
<https://www.3dhubs.com/knowledge-base>. Today, December 3 2016, is a day
of outreach for the entire network. Dano Wall <https://twitter.com/danowall> is
the Community Mayor for NYC and will be running a demo session
<https://www.3dhubs.com/events/3d-printing-day-new-york> in Brooklyn.
Skillmill <http://www.skillmillnyc.com/>, who also presented at the meetup,
are an active hub on the Upper West Side of NYC.
