[isoc-ny] NYC Mesh Supernode active this week

[ISOC-NY announcements]

ISOC-NY has recently taken on fiscal sponsorship of NYC Mesh. This means
that any donations can be deducted from taxes. Already they have raised
enough money to mount (and link to the Internet) an antenna on the Sabey
(formerly Verizon) building downtown. The next job is to build out the
mesh. See below. There is a meetup tonight on Ave A.

We're finally getting the supernode connected this week! This means that if
you are in range, it is now possible to connect to the internet through us,
bypassing your usual choice of ISPs.

To help pay for the ongoing costs of this we need monthly donations

Donations have already covered the install costs, and we are gradually
gaining monthly donors which is a great help. Twenty people at $50/month
would cover our costs. Donations beyond this will speed our expansion.
Everything helps! Donations are tax-deductible.

Part of our supernode plan is a VPN service. This will provide secure
encrypted connections for a small fee to cover costs. Events and
uncertainties of the past week make this more urgent. This service will be
running by December. Email us for details.

At the supernode, we have a sector antenna aimed at downtown Manhattan and
parts of Brooklyn. This should provide good bandwidth to those within 2
miles. To reach the supernode from further out you will need a
point-to-point connection requiring more dedicated hardware and
connections. We are looking especially for very tall buildings with rooftop
access for these connections. Please contact us
