NEW YORK, NY – On Tuesday September 22, 2009 from 12 Noon to 2 PM in
New York’s Washington Square Park, OneWebDay will hold their fourth
celebration in New York highlighting the need for a more accessible
Internet. Over the years, OneWebDay has incorporated individuals,
organizations and communities for a global holiday dedicated to the
Internet and its benefits. This year, OneWebDay will be celebrated in
over 50 major cities around the world, including 19 U.S. cities, and
will stress the integral role of volunteering and expanding
opportunities to all.
In New York City, there will be three events spanning two days. The
two events on Saturday, September 19: a session on universal broadband
for New York City and an “Open Software Day” that highlights the
benefits of open culture in New York.
The main celebration will be on Tuesday, September 22 at Washington
Square Park, where Medhi Saharkhiz, a member of Where is My Vote,
Council Member Brewer, and Phillip Ashlock, of The Open Planning
Project will speak about the Internet and democracy. Council Member
Brewer will highlight the benefits of cost-effective and sustainable
broadband in the City and how government transparency can benefit
citizen participation.
“One of the key ideas behind OneWebDay is increasing public web access
around the world and this particular day highlights the need for
transparency to increase broadband access,” points out Council Member
Brewer. “The Internet opens up the world to so many people,
particularly our young people. It is our goal bridge the digital
divide and bring economic opportunities back to New York City.”
“Everyone understands that the Internet is the pathway to economic
opportunity, from educational achievement to success on the job," said
Nathaniel James, OneWebDay Executive Director. "We can't afford to
leave anyone behind.”
OneWebDay is on the web at http://onewebday.org/nyc/ and when
twittering use the tags #owd09 and #nyc.

OneWebDay was founded in 2006 as an all-volunteer campaign to build a
constituency for the Internet in the United States and around the
world. Originally imagined as a celebration of the World Wide Web –
the services and content the Internet carries – OneWebDay has grown
into a movement of organizations, citizens and consumers who are
committed to universal and equal access to the Internet. Now in its
fourth year, OneWebDay 2009 has a full-time Executive Director,
powerful new partners and will see events in 50 cities across the
globe.
